History
Born in London, Charles Babbage displayed an early interest in mathematics. After studying at Cambridge, he co-founded the Analytical Society and later became a professor of mathematics.
Babbage is best known for conceiving the idea of a programmable computer. Though his machines were mechanical and bore little resemblance to modern computers, his designs contained elements central to them, such as conditional branching and loops. His two most famous designs are the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine.
Unfortunately, Babbage could not secure sufficient funding to complete his ambitious projects during his lifetime, and many dismissed his inventions as impractical curiosities. However, his designs have been recognized posthumously for their pioneering insights into computing.
